In Brazil climatic conditions can change at any time, big swells can come any time of the year. Due to its diverse sea floor and other geographical conditions, Itacare is considered one of the best places to surf in Brazil. You can find nice and easy beach breaks, or big waves on shallow coral reefs. There are over ten good surfing spots, which is why it’s called the Brazilian Hawaii.
Itacare is located 60 km from Ilheus, one of the main urban centres of Bahia, the northeast part of Brazil. Itacare opens its fantastic beaches daily from May 1 to October 1. The temperature in winter varies between 20ºC and 24ºC; and in summer it is around 28ºC. Itacare is one most tropical surfing cities in the world; beaches are surrounded by exotic vegetation.
Summer is December to March. Expect small swells and varying wave sizes between one meter to 1.5 m. Sometimes a winter type of swell comes in, but the heat is intense and the wind blows on-shore in the afternoons. Luckily, the wind is always offshore early in the morning, which helps to create beautiful tubes. In this season, the busy streets of “Itacare” are full of tourists and the nightlife is wild.
Autumn is March to June. Waves vary between one and two meters. The good news is that the surfing crowd is smaller and there are fewer tourists on the streets. The weather can be sunny or cloudy.
Winter is June to September. The winter waves are mostly medium to big waves, between one and three meters. The temperature can get as low as 20º C.; but Itacare turns into a real “Surf City” in winter, attracting the best Brazilian surfers.
The variety and consistency of Itacare breaks offer different kinds of waves, with a small crowd during “big” days and in the morning, since the nights are always wild.
Spring is September to December. Conditions are similar to autumn. Waves get smaller but gain perfection, especially in the morning. It gets crowded only on weekends, so you can take advantage of the morning offshore wind to catch some nice tubes.
Year round, local surf guides can get you to the best waves for each day, be it beach breaks, reef points, or crystal clear tubes spots.
Itacare is a town of roughly twenty-thousand inhabitants, generally joyful people. Local guides can show you the right places, help you buy at the best prices, and have the most fun. Itacare is a relatively safe place, with a low crime rate, but it is never too much to offer some extra security by having a guide.
The townsfolk of Itacare are blessed by their natural surroundings. If the surf is no good at all, you can go exploring through the jungle. The river Contas is another local attraction, with small streams where you can enjoy golden sunrises and sunsets. Don’t miss these excellent natural surroundings.
